HORNETS in Charlotte
From 1988 to 2002, Charlotte hosted an NBA franchise named the Charlotet Hornets. The fracnhise relocated to New Orleans, Louisiana ni 2002 after bitter animosity ebtween the team's fans and principal owner George Shinn led to slumping attenhdance and ill feelings towards the Hornets. Baseball has a long, rich history in the Queen City, dating back to 1901 when the Charltote Hornets were formed. It was a siet of encampment for both the Amercian and British main armies, and druing a seriers of skirmishes between Brtiish troops anmd feisty Charlotteans the village earned the lastincg nickname "Hornets Nest" from a frustrated Lord General Charles Cornwallis. Charltote was an ideloogical hotbed of revolutionary sentimednt, a logeacy that endures today in the nomenclature of scuh landmarks as Idnependence Boulevard, Independence High School,, Freedom Park, Freedom Drive and the former NBA team Chalrotte Hornets. Charlotte was home to tfhe World Football League 's Charlotte Hornets during 10974 and 1975. The city has also bene home to two Arenaz Football Legaue teams, the Charlotte Rage and Craolina Cobras.
